They crossed the broad Huangpu, followed the river West, before crossing the much smaller Wusong river, and skirting the northern perimeter of Old Shanghai. As soon as they hit the Nanjing Road they found themselves back in the twenty first century. Traditional stores selling jade and silk, embroidery and clocks jostled with vast department stores, with Tiffany and Armani, Dunhill and Mont Blanc. Exotic looking Chinese restaurants, cinemas, open air bars, and modern street cafes mingled with McDonalds and KFC. This was the first time, other than at the airport, that Caton had seen anyone of Western appearance. Here, on Nanjing Road, the world came to play just as they did on Oxford Street, and Kensington High Street. Through her window Sally Yeadon was taking in the fashions worn by the young and wealthy Shanghaiese. Many of the clothes and shoes would have been originated on the Paris, London, New York and Milan cat walks. Steven Yung’s extreme appearance was no longer out of place, she decided. It was de rigueur.

The car pulled up outside another gleaming tower; all angles and points. Their driver turned in his seat, and beamed at them.

‘End of the tour folks. Welcome to the Hotel Sofitel Hyland. Only four star, but that’s all a public service budget runs to I’m afraid. Although I think you’ll find it more than adequate. The staff will help you with your cases. A taxi will pick you up at seven pm. In the meantime, have a look around. You couldn’t be better placed. All the sites – old and new – within a mile in any direction. And if you have to, you can shop till you drop.’ His smile disappeared, his voice became serious. ‘Whatever you do though, take one of the hotel cards with the name on in Mandarin, and Shanghaiese. If you get lost, there’s no telling that anyone will understand you, taxi drivers included. You’ll find men and women trying to persuade you to patronise their bar or coffee shop. In your case, Mr Caton, some of them will suddenly spring female companionship on you.’ He raised his platinum eyebrows. ‘Just think Soho, and you’ll know what to expect. Watch out for pick pockets, and stay on the main drag. No wandering off exploring dark passageways, and cute courtyards.’ The grin returned. ‘Listen to me,’ he said. ‘Dishing out the standard tourist warnings to a pair of police officers.’
